Meet Kusal Mendis: Age, Role & Stats of a Big-Match Batter

Spin24star Meet Kusal Mendis – Sri Lanka Cricketer Age, Role and Stats

Ask a SL fan about Kusal Mendis, and the conversation may turn to Pallekele in 2016. AUS were the top-ranked Test team. SL needed runs. Mendis made 176 and helped his side win a match they still had plenty of work to do in.

He was only 21 then.

That innings gave fans a reason to follow him. Since then, there have been more hundreds, some quiet spells, and new duties. He keeps wicket, bats across formats, and now has the Test captaincy to think about too.

Here on Spin24star, we’ll take a closer look at his career without judging it by one score alone.

Kusal Mendis And the Beginning Chapter

Mendis birthplace is Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, on 2 Feb1995. Kusal Mendia age is 31 now. His complete name that cricket fans might not know is Balapuwaduge Kusal Gimhan Mendis.

He was the skipper of Sri Lanka in the 2014 Under-19 World Cup in UAE before making the switch to the senior side. He was also the captain of the team in the previous Under-19 Asia Cup.  Leadership, then, wasn’t something he first tried late in his career.

Kusal Mendis made his Test debut against West Indies in October 2015. He played his first ODI against Ireland in June 2016, followed by his first T20I against England in July.

He had barely begun his international career when Australia arrived for the series that changed how fans saw him.

The innings that made people take notice

At Pallekele in July 2016, Kusal Mendis scored his first Test hundred. He went on to make 176 in Sri Lanka’s second innings.

Those runs helped set up a 106-run win. This was only Sri Lanka’s second Test victory over Australia, which makes the score much more than a neat entry in his record.

He earned the Player of the Match award. His Test batting ranking rose too, but fans didn’t need a ranking list to see what he had done. The innings is a strong example of his value in a difficult match. He gave Sri Lanka runs when they mattered and helped turn the game.

It would be unfair to expect that sort of knock every time he bats. Still, when people call him a big-match batter, Pallekele is a good place to start.

Hyderabad Showed Another Side of the Story

Kusal Mendis hit 122 runs off 77 balls against PAK in the 2023 World Cup. When Sri Lanka was 344 for nine, he went on to hit 14 fours and six sixes. PAK went all strong, and hundreds from Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan helped them chase the target. They won their match by six wickets.

That’s important to remember when we tell the story. Mendis delivered a solid overall performance for Sri Lanka but Pakistan got the upper hand.

You can commend his batting without calling it a match-winning hundred.

Kusal Mendis stats across three formats

Here is his international batting record, checked on 14 October 2026 against Cricbuzz’s player profile.

Format Runs Batting average Highest score Hundreds
Tests 4,836 36.36 245 10
ODIs 5,160 36.34 143 7
T20Is 2,791 26.58 87* 0

The Kusal Mendis stats make more sense when you keep the formats apart. Tests give him time to settle. ODIs ask him to judge when to push the score along. In T20 cricket, a few quiet overs can leave much less room to catch up. Also read about All About Akash Deep: Indian Fast Bowler’s Age, IPL Team, Stats, and Net Worth

A New Job as Test Captain

Sri Lanka Cricket named Kusal Mendis Test captain on 8 October 2026. The board said the upcoming Test series in Pakistan would be his first assignment.

By then, he had played 75 Tests.

He now has more to manage than his own innings. A captain chooses when to change a bowler, where to place fielders, and how to respond when wickets don’t come.

His earlier leadership experience gives this appointment some background. But the senior Test role is a different job. We’ll learn more about his captaincy through the choices he makes on the field.

Kusal Mendis’s wife and family

Mendis married Nishell in Colombo on 12 February 2021. Reports from the time also spell her name as Nishel. The couple welcomed a daughter in June 2022, according to Daily News.

Those are the reported family details. His wife’s work and their private life don’t need guesses added to them.

His IPL Chance and a Recent Innings

Kusal Mendis joined Gujarat Titans for the closing stretch of IPL 2025, stepping in for Jos Buttler, who had to leave for ENG duty. His IPL record is still short, though, and it doesn’t reflect his international career.

If you only follow the IPL, watch some of his Sri Lanka innings instead. The latest one came on 13 October 2026 in Rawalpindi, where he finished unbeaten on 87 off 48 balls against Pakistan.
